Kodava Community to Host First-Ever Inter-Family Volleyball Tournament

The Mallamada family of Bekkesodlur village in Ponnampet taluk will host this inaugural tournament.

Ponnampet: The Kodava community in Kodagu, also known as Coorg, is set to add another exciting event to its rich tradition of sports tournaments. Following successful hockey, cricket, and tug-of-war events, the Kodava community will now conduct its first-ever inter-family volleyball tournament. The event is scheduled to take place on October 12-13, 2024.

The Mallamada family of Bekkesodlur village in Ponnampet taluk will host this inaugural tournament. A preliminary meeting was recently held at the Mallamada family’s Ainmane(ancestral home) in Bekkesodlur village, where family president Prabhu Poonacha provided detailed insights into the event.

Poonacha explained that the volleyball tournament will be organized at the Sarada High School ground in Bekkesodlur village. He emphasized that the event aims to foster cooperation, friendship, goodwill, and a stronger connection within the Kodava community through sports. The Mallamada family, which comprises 32 families, has already made significant contributions to Indian sports. Notably, Nivya Ponnamma has represented India in international hockey, and Vilma Lilavati has played for the international junior hockey team. Now, the family is taking the lead in organizing a men’s volleyball tournament, hoping to popularize the sport within the community and encourage local talent.

“The Kodava community has a longstanding tradition of hosting various sports tournaments, including hockey, cricket, and recently a tug-of-war event. Our family is now organizing this volleyball tournament to promote the sport as a family-oriented event and to encourage the emerging talents in volleyball,” Poonacha said.

In terms of rewards, the tournament promises attractive prizes. The team that secures first place will receive ₹40,000 in cash along with a trophy. The second-place team will be awarded ₹30,000 and a trophy, while the third-place team will receive ₹20,000 and a trophy. The team finishing in fourth place will get ₹10,000 and a trophy. Poonacha also mentioned that every participating team, regardless of their performance, will be rewarded, highlighting the inclusive spirit of the event.
