Madikeri: The Kodava people, renowned for their warrior lineage and unique customs, have initiated an 80-km peace march to draw attention to their declining numbers and cultural dilution in Kodagu. Spearheaded by the Federation of Kodava Samajas, the procession set off from Kutta, near the Kerala boundary, on Friday and is scheduled to conclude in Madikeri on February 7.

A turnout larger than anticipated marked the march’s commencement, according to organisers. The gathering began at the Kutta bus stand, where a vast crowd, clad in traditional Kodava garments, marched in unity for 2.5 km before embarking on the extended journey ahead. The demonstration saw enthusiastic participation from men, women, and children, with people from various parts of Kodagu joining in support.

The Kodava community has expressed deep concern over cultural sidelining, pointing to incidents such as being barred from temples while wearing their customary attire and a growing sense of socio-political alienation. Increasing migration into Kodagu, particularly from neighbouring regions of Karnataka, has intensified fears regarding the preservation of their heritage.

Regarded as an appeal for greater acknowledgment and protection of Kodava traditions, the march is expected to witness increasing participation as it progresses through the district. Organisers aspire that this movement will amplify awareness about the community’s struggles and lead to tangible efforts to safeguard their cultural roots.
