Ponnampet: Residents of Kunda village in Ponnampet taluk held a protest on Tuesday, blocking the main road to demand the closure of a concrete mixing plant operating in the village. The protestors claimed that the plant has been causing severe environmental pollution, negatively impacting the health of the villagers.
The villagers expressed concerns about the increasing pollution levels, with dust and harmful particles from the plant affecting air quality. Senior citizens, in particular, have reportedly been suffering from respiratory issues. "Many villagers have been affected by the pollution due to the plant. Senior citizens are experiencing wheezing and other health problems. The heavy vehicles from the plant have also damaged our roads," said local resident Theethamada Aiyappa.
In response to the protest, Ponnampet Tahsildar Mohan Kumar visited the site to listen to the grievances of the residents. He claimed he would check if the matter would be thoroughly investigated. "We will review the files related to the plant, and check," he said.
The villagers are demanding immediate action to shut down the plant, citing concerns over both public health and the degradation of local infrastructure. Aiyappa alleged that plant owners agreed to vacate on June 30 2024 written in December 2021, now they are claiming ignorance about the agreement. "From 30 June 2024 RMC plant has been running illegally without Panchayat No Objection Certificate(NOC)," he added.
