Bengaluru: The Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah handed over a cheque of ₹1 crore to the Kundyolanda family, organisers of the 2024 Kodava hockey festival, during a meeting held in Bengaluru on Thursday.
The fund was announced nearly a year ago in recognition of the cultural and sporting significance of this unique annual event. The cheque presentation ceremony was attended by Virajpet MLA and Legal Advisor to the Chief Minister, A.S. Ponnanna, Member of Parliament Ajay Maken, Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharanprakash Rudrappa Patil, and Urban Development & Town Planning Minister Byrathi Suresh.
The Kodava hockey festival, a hallmark event of the Kodava community in Kodagu, has grown into an international sensation. Last year, the tournament set a Guinness World Record for being the largest field hockey event. What started in 1996 with just 60 teams has now expanded to an astounding 360 teams participating this year, showcasing the Kodava community's unparalleled love for the sport.
The festival not only celebrates hockey but also reinforces the unity and cultural heritage of the Kodavas. Each year, a different Kodava family takes up the responsibility of hosting the tournament, underscoring the community's deep-rooted traditions and camaraderie.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah lauded the Kodava community for their contribution to sports and culture.
