Narrow roads, lack of proper parking facilities, and insufficient traffic management measures are exacerbating the issue.

Virajpet: Kodagu, popularly known as Coorg, is grappling with unprecedented traffic congestion as a surge of tourists descended on the region for the long Christmas and New Year holidays. The district, renowned for its serene landscapes and coffee plantations, is struggling to cope with the influx, leaving local residents frustrated.

Several photos and videos circulating on social media depict the chaotic scenes of bumper-to-bumper traffic on key routes in Kodagu, with vehicles barely moving for hours. Poomaale Kodava Weekly, in a post on Facebook, highlighted that one of the worst-hit stretches is the Virajpet to Gonikoppa road, where long queues of cars have turned the usually tranquil drive into a nightmare.

“We welcome tourists, but the current situation is overwhelming. Our roads are not designed to handle this kind of traffic. It’s disrupting daily life for locals,” said Bidappa, a resident of Virajpet.

Kodagu’s infrastructure has come under scrutiny, with residents and experts pointing out its inadequacy to manage such high volumes of visitors. Narrow roads, lack of proper parking facilities, and insufficient traffic management measures are exacerbating the issue.

Another local resident, Chinappa from Gonikoppa, voiced his concerns: “This is not just about traffic; it’s about the safety and peace of our community. Emergency services are getting delayed, and we feel like strangers in our own hometown.”

The tourism boom, though beneficial to local businesses, highlights the urgent need for infrastructural upgrades and sustainable tourism policies. Authorities are being urged to take immediate measures to address the growing challenges, ensuring a balance between welcoming tourists and preserving the quality of life for Kodagu’s residents.
