Madikeri: ‘Here to Hear,’ a mental health initiative by Mind and Matter, is set to take place in Kodagu for the first time on April 5, 2025, at The Wheel Café in Madikeri. The event, which has gained popularity in Bengaluru, encourages people to share their stories and promotes compassionate listening as a way to strengthen community mental health.
Deepika Appaiah, founder of Mind and Matter, emphasised the importance of listening as a key aspect of mental well-being. “This event is open to the general public and aims to create a space for individuals to pause, reflect, and validate their own journey,” she said.
Mind and Matter has been actively working with the Child Protection Units in Kodagu and Mysuru, along with child care institutions under them. Since 2022, their mental health initiatives, including awareness campaigns in schools and colleges, have reached over 13,000 children, 700 parents, and teachers across 50 institutions in Kodagu, Mysuru, and Hassan districts. Their ‘Paint a Wall’ initiative seeks to normalise mental health conversations, while their #SundaysForMentalHealth sessions in Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park have gained significant attention.

The organisation is also collaborating with the Muddanda Hockey Festival to run various mental health campaigns this year. Additionally, in April, five muralists will be invited to Madikeri to create large murals addressing critical social issues.
As part of the initiative, a book sale will also be held on April 5 and 6 at The Wheel Café. “We are keeping children’s books and books for adults during the sale. People can also drop off old books (not textbooks, novels, or non-fiction) and pick up books in return,” Deepika said.
