Madikeri: On Friday July 5, Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development, Sharan Prakash R. Patil, paid a visit to the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). The visit included an inspection of the medical college's facilities and an interactive session with the students.
During the interaction, students highlighted several challenges they face. One significant issue was the distance between the medical college and its affiliated hospital, which are located in different areas. The students expressed difficulties in commuting due to inadequate transportation and requested more shuttle services between the two locations.
Another major concern was the poor internet connectivity at the college. The students reported that the existing WiFi was insufficient for their academic needs and urged the installation of a mobile tower on campus to improve connectivity.
Minister Patil responded by instructing the KIMS management to enhance the WiFi facilities and increase the shuttle services for the benefit of students and staff. He acknowledged the geographical challenges of the hilly region but assured that all necessary steps would be taken to improve basic amenities.
The lack of sports infrastructure was also brought to the Minister's attention. In response, he directed officials to explore the development of sports facilities such as basketball and volleyball courts. Madikeri MLA Mantar Gowda pledged to support this initiative by working towards establishing sports infrastructure on a designated piece of land.
A female medical student raised concerns about the campus’s drinking water supply, especially during the summer months. MLA Gowda mentioned that water supply had been provided under the Jal Jeevan Mission but promised to expedite the sinking of a borewell to address the issue.
A nursing student requested a separate hostel for nursing students, while another pointed out the shortage of teaching faculty for nursing courses. MLA Gowda noted that nursing students were currently accommodated in BCM hostels and assured that steps would be taken to construct a dedicated hostel and hire more faculty.
Speaking to reporters later, Dr. Patil announced that KIMS would admit 29 postgraduate students this year and reiterated his commitment to addressing student grievances. He promised to transform KIMS into a top-tier medical education institution by improving teaching, library facilities, and other necessary infrastructure.
During his visit, the Minister also inaugurated a garden of medicinal plants on the KIMS premises under the National Service Scheme (NSS). He emphasized the importance of not compromising the future of students and the government’s role in ensuring justice and quality education.
