Bengaluru: Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna, responding to public concerns and recent news reports, convened an emergency meeting at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Tuesday to address food safety issues in Kodagu's border areas.
Attending the meeting were officials from the Kodagu district's Food Safety and Quality Department, who outlined troubling findings regarding food items entering from Kerala into Kodagu’s border areas, including Kutta, Makutta, and Perumbadi.
A recent inspection found that 90 food samples contained excessive artificial colouring and lacked essential details like production dates and manufacturer information. These samples were sent for analysis to the Indian Academy of Dairy and Food Analysis Centre (IADFAC) laboratory. According to a statement from Ponnanna, the laboratory results revealed that 31 samples were classified as unsafe, and an additional four were deemed of low quality.
Concerned by these findings, Ponnanna discussed the issue with relevant ministers and directed officials to take immediate action to protect public health. He called for a ban on the sale of the unsafe food products identified in the report and instructed officials to prevent their distribution in Kodagu’s border regions.
Highlighting the risks posed by unregulated food items, Ponnanna emphasized that consumer safety and health remain his priority. “This directive is part of a larger effort to monitor and regulate food quality standards in Kodagu, particularly along the border areas, to ensure public safety,” he added.
