MADIKERI: The Muddanda Hockey Festival, part of the renowned Kodava Hockey Festival in Karnataka’s Kodagu district, is a vibrant celebration of both sport and community. Organised by the Muddanda family, the 2025 edition has drawn participation from hundreds of Kodava families, making it one of the largest family-based field hockey tournaments in the world. Matches are being played across multiple grounds in Madikeri, creating a festive atmosphere where tradition and athleticism merge. From elders cheering on the sidelines to children in traditional Kodava attire, the festival showcases the strong cultural bond the community shares with the sport.
Beyond the competitive spirit, the event serves as a platform for Kodava families to reunite and reinforce their cultural identity. The festival includes cultural performances, food stalls serving Kodava cuisine, and ceremonial gun salutes, all deeply rooted in local traditions. More than just a hockey tournament, the Muddanda Hockey Festival symbolises unity, pride, and the Kodava way of life, fostering inter-generational connections while promoting physical fitness and community well-being.

In a first for the iconic Kodava Hockey Festival, the ongoing Muddanda Cup will see the introduction of video referral technology, marking a significant leap forward in blending tradition with technology. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College grounds in Madikeri on Monday, 21 April.
Pandanda K. Bopanna, president of the Kodava Hockey Academy, said that the semifinals will take place on April 26 and will be inaugurated by Karnataka’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao at 10 a.m. The event will be presided over by Muddanda B. Devaiah, honorary president of the Muddanda Hockey Festival Committee.
Madikeri MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda and Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy president Ajjinikanda Mahesh Nachaiah will attend the semifinals as chief guests. Felicitations will be held for umpires, technical staff, participating teams, and cyclothon participants.
The grand finale of the Muddanda Cup and the valedictory ceremony are scheduled for April 27 at 10 a.m. Muddanda Hockey Festival Committee president Muddanda Rashin Subbayya will preside over the event.
Key dignitaries expected to attend include Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, Minor Irrigation and Kodagu District In-charge Minister N.S. Boseraju, and Minister for Urban Development and Town Planning Byrathi Suresh. Among the guests of honour will be Chief Minister’s legal advisor and Virajpet MLA Ajjikuttira S. Ponnanna, Madikeri MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda, Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, and MLC Mandepanda Suja Kushalappa.
The closing ceremony will also host prominent figures from the sporting world, including Olympian and international badminton champion Ashwini Ponnappa Machimanda, former Indian field hockey player Maneyapanda M. Somayya, and Olympian Maneyapanda Ashwini Nachappa. Deputy Commissioner Venkataraj and Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan will also be present.
