Madikeri: Continuous rainfall since Thursday morning in Kodagu district has become a cause for worry among coffee planters as they started the crucial phase of harvesting and drying coffee beans. The region, renowned for its lush coffee plantations, is currently facing challenges due to the unexpected and persistent downpour.
As per the rainfall alert issued by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC): A low-pressure system is situated in the southeast Arabian Sea, and a trough extends from the cyclonic circulation linked with this low-pressure area to off the north Kerala coast at lower levels.
Under the influence of the above synoptic conditions KSNDMC indicated that scattered to widespread, light to moderate rainfall, and at isolated locations, heavy rains are expected over Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, and portions of Chamarajanagar, Shivamogga, Mysuru, and Mandya districts. The rest of Karnataka is anticipated to experience cloudy conditions with isolated instances of very light to light rains over the next five days.
Meanwhile, coffee growers in Kodagu have initiated the harvesting of Robusta coffee over the past few days and commenced the sun-drying process. However, farmers express concern that the cloudy and rainy weather will pose challenges in properly drying the coffee beans.
