Hudikeri: Farmers in Hysodlur Village are facing severe hardships as an increasing elephant menace threatens their livelihoods. Recently, three elephants have taken up residence in the village, causing significant damage to crops every other day.
Bojjangada Sunil, a local farmer and member of the Grama Panchayath in Hudikeri, expressed growing frustration over the situation. Speaking to The Kodagu Express, Sunil highlighted the escalating problem and criticized the lack of effective action from authorities.
"The elephant menace in our area is worsening, and the concerned authorities seem indifferent," Sunil said. "We urge our MLA to intervene and discuss possible solutions with the relevant departments to manage the situation."
According to farmers, the elephants have been destroying crops in the village over the past few days, including coffee, bananas, and coconuts.
Currently, the approach of local authorities involves merely chasing the elephants away when complaints are received. However, this strategy is proving ineffective as the elephants often migrate to surrounding villages, where farmers face similar issues. Sunil emphasized the need for a more comprehensive and sustainable solution.
“The authorities' current method is inadequate. The elephants just move to nearby areas, leaving the same problem unresolved. We need a thorough discussion with the authorities to find a lasting solution,” he explained.
Farmers in Hysodlur Village are hopeful that increased attention from local officials and effective intervention from MLA AS Ponnanna can help mitigate the ongoing challenges posed by these wild animals.
