Paris: In the opening round of the men’s doubles at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Indian team of Rohan Bopanna Machanda and N Sriram Balaji experienced a straight-set defeat against the French combination of Gael Monfils and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. The match, held at Court 14 of Roland-Garros on Sunday, saw Monfils and Roger-Vasselin secure a 7-5, 6-2 victory in just one hour and 16 minutes.
The Indian pair struggled early in the first set, falling behind 2-4 after an initial break of serve. Despite a strong comeback to level the set at 5-5, Bopanna and Balaji were unable to hold off the French duo, who took the set with a second break of serve in 42 minutes.
The second set proved to be even more challenging for the Indians. They dropped their serve early again and were unable to recover, allowing Monfils and Roger-Vasselin to dominate and close out the match.
With this loss, Bopanna and Balaji's campaign in tennis at the Paris Olympics comes to an end. According to a report by Sports Star, Monfils and Roger-Vasselin will advance to the second round, where they are set to face the second-seeded German team of Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz.
This year, three athletes from Kodagu are participating in the Olympics: Rohan Bopanna Machanda, badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa Machimanda, and Machettira Raju Poovamma, who is competing in the women’s 4x400m relay.
