Gonikoppal: Kodagu experienced moderate to light rainfall in some areas on Sunday, 16 March amid scorching heat, bringing brief relief to residents while coffee growers continue to wait for consistent rain for irrigation.
According to reports from the Kodagu Weather by Kodavaame, a WhatsApp community group, parts of South Kodagu received rainfall. Manchalli recorded 1.50 inches, Srimangala near PU College saw 1.54 inches, while Kutta near the temple received 0.68 inches. Other areas reported varying amounts: Kumtoor Herumadu Arch (1.48 inches), near Iruppu temple (1.15 inches), near Beeruga School (89 cents), Puthu Bhagavati temple in Birunani (4 cents), Bekkesodlur near Canara Bank (7 cents), Kanoor (9 cents), and Lakunda (40 cents).
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather update at 8 pm on March 16, forecasting light to moderate rain and thundershowers with lightning over Kodagu, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, and Ramanagara districts in the following three hours.
Despite the scattered rainfall, the daytime temperature in Kodagu remained high, with the IMD recording 32.4°C at the Gonikoppal Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) on March 16.
Coffee growers in Kodagu are eagerly awaiting more consistent rainfall, as pre-monsoon showers are essential for blossom showers, which play a crucial role in initiating coffee flowering. A lack of timely rainfall can impact the crop yield, affecting both Robusta and Arabica coffee varieties cultivated in the region.
