BENGALURU/MADIKERI: The demand for exotic fruits in India has surged, bringing avocados—also known as butter fruit—into the spotlight. However, only two native varieties exist in the country, and they have yet to surpass the widely preferred Mexican varieties cultivated by farmers.

In a bid to boost large-scale production of nutrient-rich avocados suited to Indian conditions, researchers at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru, have developed Arka Coorg Ravi, a fully indigenous avocado variety. The breakthrough comes after two decades of research at the Chettalli research station in Kodagu. The variety has been named in honour of IIHR scientist H. Ravishankar, who dedicated 35 years to the Chettalli station before passing away a few years ago.

Unlike conventional avocado varieties, which yield around 60-80 kg per tree, Arka Coorg Ravi offers a significantly higher yield of 100-180 kg per plant. Additionally, while most avocados have large seeds and relatively little pulp, this new variety features smaller seeds, allowing for an 80% pulp recovery rate, thereby enhancing its nutritional value. "This variety ensures a higher quantity of edible pulp while retaining all the essential nutrients," explained B.M. Muralidhar, a fruit scientist at IIHR-Chettalli station.

According to scientists in Chettalli , the new variety will have 80% pulp and the rest seed, making the fruit profitable for farmers. An official stated that avocados, often referred to as a miracle fruit due to their numerous health and nutritional benefits, are now witnessing significant demand in the cosmetic industry as well. The fruit is a key ingredient in various skincare products. "We have developed Arka Coorg Ravi through extensive research, which will greatly benefit farmers in the region," the official added. Currently, avocados are cultivated across approximately 500 hectares in Kodagu, interspersed with coffee plantations, and the cultivation area has been expanding in recent years.

Originally cultivated in Karnataka’s coffee-growing regions, avocados are now being grown extensively in other South Karnataka districts such as Mandya, Ramanagara, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, and Chikkaballapur.

Health benefits of avocados

Avocado, scientifically known as Persea Americana, is an evergreen plant that thrives in a variety of environmental conditions. A single tree typically yields between 120 and 150 fruits each year.

Renowned for its high content of monounsaturated fats, avocados are considered a healthy dietary choice. A single fruit provides approximately 25% of the recommended daily intake of saturated fat.

Additionally, avocados contain 60% more potassium than bananas and are packed with essential vitamins such as B, E, and K. The fruit’s juice is known for its antioxidant properties, while its seeds are utilised in paper production.
