Ponnampet/Talapula(Kerala): Kodagu district police arrested a 38-year-old man in connection with the brutal murder of four members of a family in the Balangadu region of Begur village, Ponnampet taluk, on Friday night.

The accused, identified as Girish, was the third husband of Nagi (32), one of the victims. The gruesome crime also claimed the lives of Nagi’s daughter Cauvery (7) and her elderly grandparents, Kariya and Gauri, both above 70 years old. The victims were hacked to death with a machete inside their solitary house in the tribal settlement.

Authorities were alerted about the crime around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, following which senior police officials rushed to the spot along with a forensic team to gather evidence. A case was immediately registered at Ponnampet police station.

Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan confirmed that a special investigation team was constituted under the leadership of Virajpet Division Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahesh Kumar S. to trace the accused.

According to the preliminary probe, Girish suspected that his wife had rekindled her relationship with her second husband, Subramanya. Enraged by this suspicion, he allegedly murdered all four family members on Thursday night before fleeing the scene.

In a swift operation, the special team tracked Girish down to Talapula in neighbouring Kerala and arrested him within six hours of the crime being reported. The Kodagu district police issued a press statement confirming the arrest and commended the efforts of the investigating officers in swiftly bringing the accused to justice.

Further investigations are underway to ascertain more details about the motive and the sequence of events leading up to the crime. The bodies of the victims were sent for post-mortem examination, and legal proceedings against Girish are in progress.
