Bhagamandala: A large number of devotees gathered at Talacauvery, the birthplace of the Cauvery River in Kodagu district, on Thursday, October 17, to witness the annual “Teerthodbhava” event. This sacred occasion, observed with deep reverence, attracts pilgrims from Kodagu and various parts of Karnataka and neighboring states.
“Teerthodbhava” marks the sudden emergence of water from the “Brahma Kundike,” a small pond at Talacauvery, which lies at the foothills of the Brahmagiri Hill. The event, considered highly auspicious, occurred at 7:40 a.m., when the water began to flow. The assembled crowd, eager to partake in the blessings, rushed to the sacred “Kalyani” or pond, adjacent to the Brahma Kundike, to take a holy dip.
Devotees traditionally collect the “teertha,” or holy water, which they use during festivals and religious ceremonies throughout the year. Once the priests confirmed the Teerthodbhava, people hurried to gather the sacred water, which is believed to bring blessings to those who possess it. In adherence to the ban on plastic, devotees used steel cans and vessels to collect the water, ensuring the event was eco-friendly.
The Brahma Kundike was beautifully adorned with flowers for the occasion, and proper barricades were set up to manage the large crowd.
Many devotees from Kodava Community undertook a pilgrimage by trekking from Bhagamandala to Talacauvery, covering a distance of nearly 7 kilometers. To accommodate the influx of pilgrims, KSRTC deployed 15 buses, offering free transportation to those attending the event.
Several political representatives attended the event, including Kodagu district in-charge minister Boseraju and MLA’s, MLC and senior officials were present at the event.
