Tiger Trapping Operation Launched in Hudikeri, Kodagu, After Cow Killed

State Wildlife Board member Sanketh Poovaiah visited Belluru on Sunday to engage with residents and forest officials.

Hudikeri: Belluru village, under the Hudikeri Gram Panchayat, witnessed the launch of a tiger-trapping operation on Sunday after a cow was killed by a tiger on Saturday. The cow belonged to Ramesh, a farmer from the village.

The forest department responded swiftly by installing two traps at the site of the attack and deploying cameras across key areas to monitor tiger movement. Villagers reported spotting tiger activity in the lower parts of the village on Saturday night, prompting officials to expand surveillance with additional cameras in the region.

State Wildlife Board member Sanketh Poovaiah visited Belluru on Sunday to engage with residents and forest officials, assuring them that robust measures were in place to address the threat. He emphasised the department's commitment to safely managing the situation.

If no tiger traces are detected by Sunday evening, a Rapid Forest Task Force and additional elephant teams will be deployed starting Monday. However, concerns over potential damage to coffee plantations have ruled out using elephants inside agricultural zones.

The operation is covering all four directions of the village. Should efforts to drive the tiger back to the forest prove unsuccessful, further action will involve the Chief Conservator of Forests.

Villagers, who are predominantly engaged in agricultural activities, expressed concerns over their safety and demanded immediate measures to neutralise the threat.
