Madikeri: On Sunday, the police reported that a wild elephant trampled a 60-year-old man to death in Kodagu.
According to authorities, Achchappa, a resident of Galibeedu village, had gone to work on Saturday and did not return home. During the family's search, they discovered his body at Nishane Hill in Madikeri Taluk. Forest officials, upon arriving at the scene, observed elephant footprints, leading them to conclude that the man had been trampled by an elephant.
Madikeri Rural police have registered the case and the investigation is underway.
Over the past four years, Kodagu district has documented the highest number of fatalities resulting from wild elephant attacks in Karnataka. In the fiscal year 2021-22, Kodagu recorded 12 human deaths. The district reported eight deaths in 2020-21, five each in 2022-23 and 2019-20, as per information provided by the Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, in response to a question raised by Rajya Sabha member Narayana Koragappa during the August 2023 session.
