Tribute to Nanjamma Chinnappa: A Legacy of Kodava Cultural Preservation

Mysuru: Dr. Boverianda Nanjamma Chinnappa, a scholar in Kodava studies, passed away on Sunday31 March 2024 in Mysuru. She was the grandchild of Nadikerianda Chinnappa, renowned for compiling the Pattole Palame.


Ms. Nanjamma, an statistician and author, passed away at the age of 89 in a private hospital in Mysuru, as confirmed by family sources. She is survived by her two daughters. In accordance with her wishes, her body was donated to the hospital.


Boverianda M. Chinnappa, aged 89, a distinguished Engineer and Consultant with experience in both India and Canada, passed away on March 10, 2023.


Originally scripted in Kannada, "Pattole Palame" has been translated into English by Ms. Nanjamma and Mr. Chinnappa, both of whom pursued their professions across Chennai, Kolkata, and Canada. Nanjamma held a visiting fellowship at Cambridge University in 1974 and co-authored a book on Business Survey Methods.


Additionally, she was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 1993 and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree (D. Litt.) by Mangalore University in 2006, conferred by T. N. Chaturvedi, the Governor of Karnataka.


Ms. Nanjamma and Mr. Chinnappa embarked on a project to gather comprehensive information about every Ainmane in Kodagu, regardless of the community or caste of its residents. Between April 2003 and May 2008, they visited numerous Ainmanes, collecting oral legends and traditional knowledge from their occupants. Additionally, they conducted research on the relevant clans using previously published material whenever possible. The data amassed through these efforts is now accessible on the Ainmanes website. In 2014, they published their work titled Ainmanes of Kodagu.
