Virajpet: The devastating landslide that struck Meppadi Village in Kerala’s Wayanad district early on July 30 has left a profound impact. A.S. Ponnanna, Legal Advisor to the Chief Minister of Karnataka and MLA of Virajpet, expressed his deep condolences in the wake of this disaster.
"The landslide disaster in Meppadi Village in Wayanad district of Kerala has brought a heavy shock. I pray for peace for the souls of the innocent lives lost in the tragedy. I hope that the rescue operations will be completed successfully and everyone will be brought to safety," Ponnanna said.
The catastrophic landslides, which occurred in the early hours of July 30, have buried extensive areas under tons of debris. According to reports from The Hindu, the disaster has claimed at least 106 lives, with many more injured and numerous individuals still missing.
The picturesque villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha have been severely impacted. The landslides have isolated these communities, with roads blocked and vehicles washed away and stuck in tree trunks or submerged in floodwaters. The disaster has rendered many areas virtually inaccessible, further complicating rescue efforts.
Rescue teams are facing significant challenges as they work to reach the affected regions. Huge boulders that have rolled down from the hills are obstructing their path, making the rescue operations arduous and dangerous. Despite the heavy rains and treacherous conditions, rescue workers are diligently transporting the deceased and injured to safety.
