Virajpet: In Pudukote village, Virajpet taluk of Kodagu District, wild elephants have entered farmland belonging to Mandepanda Ganapathi, leaving behind extensive damage.
The elephants ravaged nearly 1.5 acres of paddy fields, significantly affecting the farmer’s anticipated yield and causing a considerable loss.
Farmer Ganapathi, sharing his distress, explained, “Wild elephants entered the paddy fields and destroyed the crops. Due to the elephant attack, we farmers have suffered losses as the harvest they worked hard for has been ruined.” The destroyed crops were cultivated over months, involving significant labour and financial investment, all of which has now been wasted.
Human-elephant conflicts are on the rise in Kodagu, where farmland often borders forests. As elephants wander into human settlements, driven by food scarcity in the forests, farmers bear the brunt.
Many local farmers have faced similar threats, leading to calls for stronger preventative measures and compensation schemes. Authorities are urged to address these concerns to provide relief to affected farmers and prevent future incidents that threaten the livelihood of agricultural communities in the region.
