KUSHALNAGAR: A protest march was held on Friday from Chikkaluvara to Kushalnagar, led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), urging the government to reconsider the decision to shut down Kodagu University.
Former MLA M.P. Appacchu Ranjan inaugurated the march, highlighting that the university was established during the tenure of former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. He further pointed out that a grant of ₹15 crore had been allocated for the Jnana Kaveri Postgraduate Centre in Chikkaluvara during the leadership of former CM B.S. Yediyurappa.
Criticising the current Congress-led state government, Ranjan alleged that it had completely neglected the university by failing to provide necessary funding. He warned that the protests would escalate if the government proceeded with its decision.
Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar emphasised that education and healthcare are essential pillars of a progressive society. He accused the state government of financial mismanagement, which, he claimed, was leading to the closure of public universities. “State-run universities serve as a beacon of hope for students from middle and lower-middle-class backgrounds aspiring for higher education. The government must not shut down Kodagu University,” he urged.
MLC M.P. Suja Kushalappa, along with several other leaders, joined the protest, which witnessed participation from hundreds of students. Demonstrators chanted slogans against the government's decision and later formed a human chain at Field Marshal Cariappa Circle. The protest concluded with a memorandum being submitted to the authorities through Tahsildar Kiran Gowraiah, requesting the continuation of the university.
