Wayanad: In a heartbreaking turn of events, a young student from Kodagu district was found dead following the devastating landslide in Wayanad, Kerala. Rohith, a fourth-grade student from Guhya Government School near Siddapur in Virajpet taluk, was reported missing after the landslide on Monday night. His body was discovered by rescue teams on Wednesday.
Rohith, who was just eight years old, had traveled to Wayanad with his mother, Kavitha, who had taken him to stay with relatives. The family had rented a house near Siddapur School in Kodagu, where Rohith’s parents, Ravi and Kavitha, work as laborers.
With this update, the death toll in Karnataka from the landslide tragedy has risen to 9.
The catastrophic landslides, which occurred in the early hours of July 30, have buried extensive areas under tons of debris. According to reports, the disaster has claimed at least 275 people and left 197 injured and numerous individuals still missing.
The picturesque villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha have been severely impacted. The landslides have isolated these communities, with roads blocked and vehicles washed away and stuck in tree trunks or submerged in floodwaters. The disaster has rendered many areas virtually inaccessible, further complicating rescue efforts.
ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) has unveiled high-resolution satellite images that showcase the significant damage inflicted by the landslide in Wayanad district, Kerala.
NRSC has published before-and-after images of Chooralmala in Wayanad district, severely impacted by the July 30 landslide. The images reveal that approximately 86,000 square meters of land has been displaced.
